What is Bank on Greater Pittsburgh?

The Bank On Greater Pittsburgh (BOGP) initiative involves partnerships among local government officials, financial institutions and community based organizations to develop pathways to access basic, free or low-cost financial institution transaction accounts and financial education.

All are welcome to participate with BOGP. Private and public, for-profit and not-for-profit organizations, educators, leaders and workers are joining over 70 Bank On cities across the country to reduce barriers to banking and increase access to the financial mainstream for low to moderate income individuals.  This collaborative effort is led by the Urban League of Greater Pittsburgh, with the support of Pittsburgh Mayor Bill Peduto and County Executive Rich Fitzgerald.  Funding is provided by United Way of Allegheny County.
Families who do not use bank accounts and other safe, affordable financial services often live paycheck to paycheck — and precariously close to a serious financial crisis. Bank accounts provide a family with safe means to secure, access, and save money. Bank accounts are tools to make basic financial transactions necessary for day-to-day life. Insurmountable obstacles to gaining access to mainstream financial products and services causes the unbanked and underbanked to turn to financial services that deplete, rather than preserve, their money. This alternative system includes check cashers, payday loan providers, pawn shops, auto title lenders and rent-to-own stores that charge high fees for services the majority of citizens access for much less. Over the course of an average working life, the unbanked and underbanked may pay approximately $40,000 on unnecessary fees.

  • More than 10% of Pittsburgh residents have no bank account and another 19% rely heavily on risky alternative financial tools such as payday loans, check-cashing shops, and rent-to-own arrangements. This represents more than 130,000 households living without financial security
